Professional Testimonials

So that you can get a sense of how others experience me in my professional work, I offer the testimonials below from clinicians that I have supervised or with whom I have studied over several years who know me and my work well.

Please note that I don't solicit testimonials or reviews from current or former clients because it's considered unethical according to the ethics codes of all mental health professions. I take therapy extremely seriously - it is an intensely private and personal endeavor.  By not soliciting reviews, I put your needs first. I encourage those who work with me to let me know personally if I've said or done something to upset them.

Renée Spencer was my supervisor in my private practice internship between June 2011 and January 2013. She was a gifted supervisor who was both rigorous in her thinking and compassionate. I was very much in the process of finding my voice and marshalling my strengths as a therapist. Renée helped me to think more critically and to trust myself more deeply. I went on to train as a psychoanalyst, and Renée’s warmth as an analyst has stayed with me as a reminder and inspiration.

My patients while I was working with Renée were diverse, in terms of demographics, presenting issues and personality structure. In addition to depth, Renée had breadth in her approach. Her flexibility and the range of her knowledge were incredibly valuable to me.
I was lucky to have such a humane, committed and smart supervisor during this time. I wholeheartedly recommend her as a supervisor, consultant, psychotherapist, and psychoanalyst.

Renée Spencer is an excellent therapist and a wonderful colleague. I’m really lucky to have had her as my first MFT supervisor. I worked with her once a week for a year, and in that way I got to know her practice and approach. Renée was empathetic and kind towards me as I got my footing in a new career. I was often afraid, confused, and intimidated by becoming a therapist, as people often are when they begin therapy itself. Renée was always honest with me about the work, which I really needed. But she was quick to give me both supportive encouragement and practical help too. The combination helped me to develop a lot of confidence and optimism in my first year. She also got me involved with the SF Psychoanalytic Center (SFCP), which set me on an ongoing-training path, and has provided me with a supportive community. I will always be very grateful to her for helping me get started in such a positive way.

I’ve spent several years in study settings with Renée where I’ve had the opportunity to come to know her work. She is a highly skilled clinician as well as a kind, warm-hearted person. Her intelligence, experience, insightfulness and compassion are characteristics that make her a gifted therapist. Renée has the ability to create an environment in which a person can explore their concerns and gain the kind of emotional clarity that leads to practical change. If you’re considering therapy, I recommend you place Renée on top of your list.

I am so glad to have had the opportunity to have worked with Renée for 5 years in classes and study groups through an intensive advanced training program in psychoanalysis. Reneé brings a combination of sensitivity and empathy along with a great intelligence to her clinical work. I’ve been impressed by Renée’s ability to connect with and creatively help people to heal, grow, and work through emotional issues. I consider her an exceptionally gifted therapist and recommend her heartily to those seeking to move past emotional barriers and tap into their potential, both personally and in their professional lives.

I have known Renée as a colleague for many years. She is a thoughtful, thorough clinician who never shies away from learning and growing. Her commitment to expanding her training is truly admirable. I am convinced her patients greatly benefit from working with her. I highly recommend her to anyone who truly wishes to turn their life around.

I’ve known Renée for many years both as a friend and colleague. She is an incredibly insightful, compassionate and intelligent therapist, and I would highly recommend her to anyone who wants to take that dive into better understanding who they are and what is motivating them. She can be very empathetic, but I also appreciate her ability to gently challenge one’s belief systems. I am impressed with her dedication to continuously deepen her learning of psychotherapy both for herself and her clients.
